The entire framework of rail transport in Costa Rica is run as well as managed by the Instituto Costarricense de Ferrocarriles, or Incofer, in the abbreviated form. However, a private company by the name o America Travel is also known to organize weekend train trips for the tourists from the capital city of San Jose to Caldera. Incofer, on the other hand operates from San Jose to San Pedro including Universidad Latina and Pavas. Freight trains from San Jose to Caldera, covering a distance of 91 km, are also managed by Incofer.

The electrification of the Costa Rican rail lines was finally made possible in the year 1926. The first electric train that ran in the Costa Rican tracks was known to cover the trajectory from San Jose to Puntarenas on the 8th of April, 1930. The Costa Rican Railway transportation system has also been through catastrophes. In the year 1991, the entire railway network of this South American country was found to be damaged, as a result of a fatal earthquake. Rail transportation after this calamitous incident remained suspended up to the year 1995. With the onset of the new millennium, the Costa Rican state rail road authority, or the Incofer, resumed the railway network again in Costa Rica, and is still pursuing to popularize the same.
According to the last obtained statistical figures in 2006, the flowing trains are known to be operational in this South American country of Costa Rica:
- Tico Train Tour San Jose: These are also known as the weekend tourist trains that are privately managed using the railways networks of the Inofer.
- Commuter train San Jose: This train makes San Pedro and Universidad Latina accessible and connected
- Commuter train San Jose-Pavas: This particular train is known to travel a distance of 6 kilometers, in the same track, as done by Tico Train.
- Freight Train, San Jose: These are destined for Caldera and specialize in carrying goods that are of commercial interest.
