Here you can look into the eyes of the wildest of crocodiles, catch a glimpse of soaring eagles, be enthralled at the sight of some of the largest numbers of turtles, or be taken aback by the sudden plunge of the bulldog bat appearing out of the thick mist and delving to pick a fish before vanishing back in the mist within a jiffy – you can do all of these at one time and still be unaware of so much of other myriad sights to see in Tortuguero National Park.
Encompassing some of the most diverse ecological habitats counting up to as many as eleven ranging anywhere between towering rain forests and non-woody marsh types of vegetation, Tortuguero National Park is composed of an infinite stretch of beach facing the Caribbean Sea, bordered immediately by a lagoon which is in turn bounded by a watery coastal rainforest intersected by numerous rivers, leading up to the volcanic hills namely Coronel, Las Lomas de Sierpe and Caño Moreno, ending finally at the vast region covered with swamps. The entire landmass covered by the Tortuguero National Park is a staggering 19000 hectares. Although it receives very heavy rain in the months of January, June and July and little rains every now and then, the weather in the park is extremely humid but quite cool with almost no flowing air.
Tortuguero National Park, with its huge expanse, sustains innumerable species of fauna such as more than three hundred species of birds, sixty species of amphibians, more than hundred species of reptiles, sixty species of mammals including the most endangered jaguars, ocelots, tapirs, cougars, manatees ad river otters. The species of birds are also endless adding to the mysterious and eerie sounds of the forests. But what is of the most special interest is the sight of some of the largest numbers of giant green turtles on the shores, who come to the protected nestling area on the beach in order to lay eggs. You can view the amazing phenomenon way into the late hours of the night on one of the guided turtle walks during the nesting season.
You can walk along the trails in the forests to get first hand experience of the atmosphere of the Tortuguero National Park or also go hiking on the beach. But if you think walking all the miles will get you too tired, you can easily hire canoes or boats in the area of Tortuguero village and paddle or row down the wide canals. You are guaranteed to have some of the most adventurous and fabulous times of your life in this Tortuguero National Park.
