Located in the city of Cartago about 25 km away from San Jose
on the valley of Orosí, Ruinas de Ujarras is visited by thousands
of tourists today, and in the past was visited by thousands
of tourists. The reason behind it being a basilica was located
at this place, which has been now turned into ruins. The name
Ruinas de Ujarras has been primarily given to the ruins of this
basilica. The place initially was a village area which was done
away and abandoned after the floods of 1833. The basilica was
home to a rock on which black Madonna or La Negrita was believed
to have appeared according to folklore. The rock was very holy
and pilgrims came from far flung places just to touch the rock.
But this Basilica was subject to numerous earthquakes and then
rebuilt. But after its final destruction of 1910, the church
was abandoned and another cathedral was built further away from
this site and the rock of Le Negrita was moved to this new church.
The Ruinas de Ujarras still looks pretty and stands as the witness
to the medieval architecture of the Central America. Here the
old world feeling takes you back in time and makes you realize
the way people used to live in Costa Rica before modernization
touched its shores. Even to this day, the fiesta of the Virgin
of Ujarras is celebrated every year on August 16 around the
area surrounding the Ruinas de Ujarras.
