Monteverde Biological Reserve, also called Monteverde cloud forest biological reserve, is located at a distance of about 6 km from the city of Santa Elena and a four hour drive from San Jose, at a height of about 1,200 m and 1,600 m above the sea level. Due to its elevation, it is perpetually covered by a layer of mist and low clouds, which renders the humid atmosphere of the entire reserve. It is this misty humidity that sustains the incredible diversity of flora and fauna that Monteverde Biological Reserve is home to. Covering a total area of about twenty six thousand acres of land, the forest reserve encompasses eight biologically distinct zones where about two thousand species of plants, hundred species of mammals, four hundred species of birds, one thousand and two hundred species of amphibians and reptiles, three hundred species of orchids and two hundred species of ferns exist. Some of the best species of the fauna found here are those of guans, toucanets, golden toad, jaguars, pumas, monkeys and bellbirds and other numerous species of birds native to this place only.
The best view of the entire forest can be best experienced from the skywalk made of cables and wired bridges that stretches from one end of the Monteverde Biological Reserve to the other, places above the highest of the towering trees. From here you can also get an exceptional view of the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. There is also a single trail that helps you to the best of the views of the forest, as you walk through orchids and ferns and brightly hued flowers. However, only a handful of tourists are allowed to visit the place in a day in order to maintain the balance in the ecology of the place.
