Isla del Coco National park

An isolated island off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica but very much a part of the nation’s territory itself, Isla del Coco National Park can be easily called as the Central American version of the Galapagos Islands which was discovered by Darwin. Covering a land area of a total of about two and a half hectares of land, the existence of the Isla del Coco National Park was brought to the world in the 1526 when it was a deserted island and the favorite haunt of pirates which came from long distance to come for across large distances, who used to come to this place in search of treasures which legend says, are present hidden somewhere in the wilderness even today.

Although during the Spanish colonial times in Costa Rica, steps were taken to inhabit the land area, eventually humans had to desert the island due to its weather and topographical features.

Much later was the island turned into the Isla del Coco National Park as it is called today, providing sustenance to innumerable endemic species which evolved on this land due to its isolated position on the geographical map, some of which have striking similarity to those existent in the Galapagos Islands. When you visit the national park you will realize to your greatest surprise that it is an open ecological laboratory, where nature as the preserver has carried out myriad experiments in order give form to the amazing species of flora and fauna that are native of and found only in Isla del Coco National Park. The heavy rainfall per year ranging to almost 7000 mm has helped to sustain these species and keep the forests green over all these years, as it supplied not only absolutely fresh atmosphere but plenty of fresh water too. From staggering Iglesias Hill to the hundreds of cascading waterfalls plunging into the turquoise blue water delving deep into its heart to reach the vast expanse of underwater caves – the natural extravaganza of the Isla del Coco National Park along with the promise of viewing a whole new world through its diversity in ecology, makes it an irresistible destination to the tourists.

The fauna thriving in the Isla del Coco National Park encompass more than 200 species of plants, more than 300 species of insects, 2 species of lizards and salamander, three species of spiders, more than 80 species of birds, about 60 species of crustaceans, around 120 species of mollusks, more than 200 species of fishes and 18 species of birds. Amongst the most unique birds found are the Pinzón of Isla del Coco, the Cuclillo of Isla del Coco, and Mosquerito of Isla del Coco, where as the sea abounds in sharks at every step, with giant hammerhead being aplenty.

The island offers numerous activities to the tourists beginning from snorkeling to diving and trekking of the island as the animals are never afraid of the human threats. The diversity and beauty of the Isla del Coco National Park has helped it to make a place for itself in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list.
