Situated at a height of 1435 m on the banks of the
river Cartago River and about 25 km away from San Jose, Cartago
is a city in Costa Rica and the capital of the Cartago province.
This city has a very important historical background as it was
the place which saw the first permanent Spanish settlement of
Costa Rica. Founded in the year 1563, Cartago went on to become
the capital city of the nation under the Spanish rule and went
on to remain the same for many years to follow. Visits to this
city takes you back in time of the Costa Rican medieval times
and fills you will the charm of the times.
The city, as a part of the tourist attractions, has quite a
buildings belonging to the medieval era as well a famous cathedral
of the name Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles
and Las Ruinas de Ujarras.
Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles – Built in the 19th Century in Byzantine style of architecture, this is the most important place of pilgrimage in the whole of the nation. This is because, a rock on which black Madonna or La Negrita as she is lovingly called, appeared to a village girl, is kept in the secret enclosure of the cathedral. Pilgrims from places at far distances come to this place through out the year.
Las Ruinas de Ujarras – This is the ruins of an old church
which was destroyed by the earthquakes of 1822, 1841 and 1910.
After the last destruction of 1910, this was abandoned and the
main cathedral along with the Holy statue of Virgin of Nuestra
Señora de Los Angeles was moved to a new basilica, which was
built close where Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles
was built.
