Established in 1963, the Cabo Blanco Absolute National Reserve is the oldest of all natural reserves of Costa Rica. The reserve was created due to a crusade by Nicholas Wesserberg and his wife, Karen Mongenson. The Cabo Blanco Natural Park covers an area of 3140 acres on land and 4420 acres on sea. The park houses the San Miguel Biological station, established to promote research in environmental education. The flora at the Cabo Blanco Absolute National Reserve mainly consists of mixed forest, mainly classified as moist tropical forest. An amazing variety of trees and animals which are typical of this kind of climate makes the visit to this park, a treat for nature lovers. Till date, 150 trees have been identified. A mixture of evergreen and deciduous trees never lets the natural reserve wear a deserted look. Though the evergreen trees are more in number, trees of the dry forest varieties are also present. The commonly available species include lance wood, dogwood, frangipani, bastard cedar, wild plum, gumbo-limbo, trumpet tree and spiny cedar. Some spiny cedar trees of the park have a height of about 50 meters. The Cabo Blanco Absolute National Reserve mostly comprises of secondary forests. The primary forest accounts for about 15% of the total land area and is found in the most inaccessible parts of the reserve.
The animals found in the Cabo Blanco Natural Park are mainly animals of the tropical region like, white-tailed deer, pacas, armadillos, anteaters, howler, spider and white-faced monkeys, collared peccary. Other animals like coyotes, porcupines, raccoons and coatis can also be found. If you are a keen observer then you may steal a glance of ocelots, or margay cats or even jaguarundis. Many varieties of birds like magpie jay, motmot, long-tailed manakin, cattle egret, crested caracara, elegant trogon, white bellied chachalaca, ringed kingfisher and sulphur-winged parakeet, can be found in this natural park. The marine portion of the reserve abounds in wildlife as well.
