The first commercial butterfly farm of Costa Rica and the entire Latin America, Costa Rica Entomological Supply (CRES) was established in 1984. It was set up with a purpose of supplying butterfly pupae, to the emerging butterfly exhibit industry. Butterflies are exhibited within an enclosed greenhouse which has the environment of a tropical forest. The butterfly farms contain hundreds and thousands of butterflies within the enclosure. Though established much earlier Costa Rica Entomological Supply (CRES) opened its doors to visitors from 1990, on popular demand. The CRES provides guided tours to visitors. The life cycle of butterflies are explained to tourists. The anatomy, physiology of these beautiful creatures at different stages of their life is also explained. Defense mechanism, relationship with host plant, and various facets of the farm's operations are explained to tourists. If the tourists are lucky enough they can witness a butterfly’s emergence from its pupae. If a tourist visits the farm on an export day, he can also see thousands of packed pupae being transported to other butterfly farms.
