A certain amount of area was brought under the direct control of the MINAE and these areas were given the designation of national parks of Costa Rica. One such important national park of Costa Rica is the Braulio Carrillo National Park. The Braulio Carrillo National Park is situated between the eastern edge of the central volcanic corridor of Costa Rica between San Jose and Puerto Limon, in the Volcanic Cordillera Conservation Area. The Guapiles highway bisects the park. The Braulio Carrillo National Park is famous for its physical features like the Barva Volcano, Hondura River, Patria River and the Sucio River. Besides these the park also has many dormant volcanos named, Cerro Chompipe, Cerro Cacho Negro and Cerros las Tres Marias. The Barva volcano has many crater lakes like the Barva, Danta and Copey. The watershed region of the Sarapiqui river also falls within the territories of the Braulio Carrillo National Park.
The park was established in 1978 as an agreement between the
Government of Costa Rica and environmentalists. It was done
to prevent further development after the construction of the
Guapiles highway. The unique combination of climate, altitude
and topography makes the park a home to a species belonging
to several life zones. The vegetation within the Braulio Carrillo
National Park ranges from cloud forests to low lying tropical
forests and rain forests. The main attractions of this national
park are its hiking trails. Several hiking trails like the Los
Botarramas, La Botella, Sendero Histórico and the trail from
Puesto Barva. Hikers must remember to bring rain gears, as incessant
rainfall is a natural characteristic of this place. The park
is also famous for its biodiversity and contains about 600 species
of trees, 135 species of mammals and 500 species of birds. Exotic
species of birds like the Solitary Eagle and the Umbrella Bird
can be found in the Braulio Carrillo National Park. The national
park is also famous for the unique species of Matabuey snake.
