The history of Costa Rica is as interesting as the attractions of the country. The history of Costa Rica tells us that this country was the abode of the Native Americans in the pre- Columbian era. The year of 1552 is important in the history of Costa Rica as the settlement of the country began in that period. In sixteenth century the natives of the country were captured by the Spanish and the country came under the domain of the New Spain. Cartago was the then capital of Costa Rica. However, after remaining under the Spanish rule for a long span of three centuries, the country gained the position of an independent agrarian society. Agriculture being the back bone of the economy, assumed a major role in the feature of the country of Costa Rica.

The country of Costa Rica had faced tremendous poverty that gave birth to a tradition in the country that the people of Costa Rica farm their own crops individually. The governor of the country also practiced farming of crops by his own. The history of Costa Rica also unveils another tradition of the country that believes in the equality of the all. This tradition of egalitarian also triumphs over the class distinctions of the nineteenth century. The distinction was due to the emergence of the coffee and banana cultivation that finally results in collections of wealth. But with passing of time eco tourism and technology took the part for playing major roles in the economy of the country.
Costa Rica officially gained independence from Spain in 1821. It joined with the United States of Central America and San Jose was chosen as its capital. But after a long time the Costa Rica gained the power of democracy in 1889.
